Book summary
The second novel moves between St Petersburg, Ireland and America at the beginning of the twentieth century. Alexei and Elena Kalenin’s Russian household and Lee MacKail’s American family appear to belong to separate worlds, yet both descend from decisions made generations earlier.
Revolutionary tension, emigration and the sinking of Titanic bring previously separated lives together. The survivors enter a century of war, bereavement and reinvention. Milo, Wes and Tom each carry the consequences of conflict differently, while the next generation eventually reaches San Francisco and wartime Italy.
The novel explores survival not as an ending, but as the beginning of another inheritance.
