Book summary

Rory MacKail escapes Paris during the Terror and travels east under altered papers. In Russia he becomes Ruarid Kalenin, marries Ekaterina Morozova and establishes a household whose descendants will eventually connect with the twentieth-century family.

His work with optics, treated plates and experimental image-making gives the novel its scientific thread. Yet the more successfully he belongs in Russia, the more complicated his relationship becomes with the Ireland he left behind.

In 1826, after decades of absence, Rory must decide whether returning to Killiecrankie Farm can restore anything—or merely reveal how thoroughly time has changed them all.
